Barry K. Thacker, PE has been named the first recipient of ASFE's Founders' Award. ASFE created its Founders’ Award to recognize individuals who have achieved outstanding community service accomplishments as representatives of their professions. Barry has been selected to receive the initial ASFE Founders’ Award for his ongoing work with the Coal Creek Watershed Foundation, through which Barry has helped improve the quality of life in Coal Creek Watershed communities.

Barry K. Thacker, PE, President and Principal Engineer of Geo/Environmental Associates, Inc,  has been presented The Professional Award in Engineering by the University of Louisville Speed Scientific School. This award is presented each year to an alumnus who has distinguished himself by career performance in engineering. Mr. Thacker is the winner of 2001 Professional Award in Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Mr. Thacker (left) is a 1977 MEng alumnus of civil engineering. Presenting the award was Dr. Louis Cohn, Chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department."

This award was not only for his distinguished career as a leader in engineering, but in part presented for Mr. Thacker’s volunteer service using his engineering skills in the founding of the Coal Creek Watershed Foundation, Inc., a non-profit group consisting of all volunteers whose mission is to "improve the quality of life in the Coal Creek watershed" of Anderson County, Tennessee.   Mr. Thacker continually encourages professional engineers to use their engineering skills to assist communities and projects for those who would otherwise not be able to afford their services.
