The Meigs Slurry Impoundment was constructed in 1984 to provide disposal capacity for coarse and fine coal processing wastes. Because the crest of the dam was constructed to the elevation of the top of the ridge at the site, various options were examined for providing continued waste disposal capacity. Modifications were designed to enable the dam to be raised by the upstream construction method.

Also, a perimeter dike was designed to enable the impoundment to be raised as much as 100 feet in elevation above the original top of the ridge. The modifications will provide an additional 20 years of waste disposal capacity while enabling the downstream face of the dam to be revegetated concurrent with waste disposal operations.
