As part of the new Sage Mill Industrial Park development, a spur track approximately 3.5 miles long is being constructed to service a new Bridgestone/Firestone Company facility. The spur track will connect the plant to existing Norfolk Southern track. The track passes through several valleys with extensive wetlands. In order to maintain required track grades and minimize the impact to the wetlands, retaining wall embankments were constructed. GA engineers designed the walls to meet the strict Norfolk Southern standards. The constructed walls consisted of anchored H-piles and steel bin wall lagging with exposed face heights up to 32 feet. Unique aspects of the walls were that they were built from the bottom up using rock anchors at the toe of the wall, tie bars connecting parallel walls on opposite sides of the embankment, and deadman anchors for single face walls.
