As part of a major addition to the General Hospital, the existing hospital required underpinning for a 16 feet deep excavation. To minimize settlements and disturbance to the active hospital, jet grouting was selected as the best underpinning method. The underpinning design consisted of jetting a series of overlapping "soilcrete" columns to provide excavation support and transfer the hospital column loads to a dense sand strata. Construction of the soilcrete underpinning was performed by Hayward Baker, Inc.
