In order to provide a maintenance shoulder for a narrow section of mainline rail in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, a series of retaining walls were designed and constructed. The walls consisted of steel bins backfilled with stone. The project required careful layout and planning to maintain both the mainline rail and adjacent county road during construction. The construction was performed by Phillips & Jordan. Click here for drawing
