MEETING RESULTS W/PHOTOS

The exact location of the meeting will be along First Creek near the intersection of Adair and North Broadway. If you are going north on N Broadway, turn left onto Adair. Turn right into the shopping center where Big Lots is located. The creek runs through the east side of the parking lot. In the south half of the lot, the creek passes through a box. Near the edge of the box's outlet is a large white shelter with a rain gauge next to it. Inside is the sampling equipment. It will be on the right as you are entering the shopping center from Adair. We will demonstrate the equipment for sampling the stormwater runoff, then we will look at another discharge. The crew members will use the City's kit to test and evaluate the water from that discharge into the creek. The processes used by the City to eliminate such discharges will also be explained.

TVA West Tower.  Visit the "war room" where TVA manages lake levels and river flows to strike a delicate balance between flood control, navigation, power supply, water quality, recreation, and land use. TVA will do a slide show about River Operations and discuss the basics of how and why TVA operates the river system the way they do. Then a tour of the River Forecast Center to see how TVA actually puts a "river schedule" together. At the end we will have a river scheduling "game" that we can let everyone have a try at once they have been properly trained!

Meeting Results

We plan to present a groundwater remediation project, including modeling of the contaminant plume(s), collection of the groundwater (pumping and piping), treatment of the groundwater, and reintroducing the water back into the environment. We will touch on some ecological issues, some economic issues, and more. We may not have an interactive laboratory, but plan to be able to change parameters "on the fly" during the model(s) presentations. The presentation will be primarily Power Point, but with some model demonstration.

This will include a very brief history of how America originally conceived the interstate system; interstate funding sources; and facility planning, design and construction. Participants will have the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience with surveying and the computer-aided design of a local highway facility and to visit some on-going local highway construction projects. Transportation to and from the local highway construction projects will be provided. An optional hands-on work session with our computer and highway design software will be available at noon along with a pizza lunch.

Click for community service results

Saturday, April 28, 2001 Engineering Venture Crew Activity will be a community service project in Briceville, Tennessee.  Engineering involves more than just math and science.  Skills like logistical planning, effective communication, and leadership are also needed.  Participation in community service initiatives provides the means for young engineers to hone these skills. Community service also allows engineers to provide our expertise to those who could not otherwise afford our services.

We will meet at the offices of Geo/Environmental Associates, Inc. at 6:30 am on Saturday, April 28th. (Map) We will drive to Briceville to help with marking the Coal Creek Motor Discovery Trail and related activities along with other volunteers.  We will work until noon and then drive back to Knoxville.   In order to participate in this event, you need to have your guardian complete the permission slip that will be mailed to you.
