CITY OF KNOXVILLE ENGINEERING HOSTS

ENGINEERING VENTURE CREW

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2000

We had our second Engineering Venture Crew on November 2, 2000.  There was high school band competitions that day, so we missed a few members, but we understand that our schedule is expected to have conflicts sometimes.

The crew members were hosted by Bob Jones of the City of Knoxville Engineering Department.  Bob has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Tennessee. Also, Mark Johnson, attended and demonstrated the city's automatic sampler system.  Mark has an Associates Degree in Engineering Technology from Pellissippi State.

Knoxvi1.jpg (62246 bytes)Mark is showing a stream velocity probe (like the one in the stream inside the box culvert).  Mark noted that this probe was damaged by rodents (probably a muskrat) and illustrated how engineering efforts are occasionally hampered by natural forces. Knoxvi2.jpg (79116 bytes)The crew is inspecting the high tech equipment inside the stormwater sampling station along First Creek.

NEXT VENTURE CREW MEETING IS SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2 AT 10:00 AM.  HOSTED BY TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY.

vc24.JPG (152989 bytes)The crew looks at a stormwater outfall (not shown) that is discharging water of unknown content from an unknown source into First Creek. vc25.JPG (67255 bytes)Crew member, Nic, is returning with a sample of the discharge that he just obtained from the outfall.  Note that this is not a set up.  This is an actual unidentified (possibly illicit) discharge.  Hopefully the efforts of the crew will assist us in eventually identifying the source. vc26.JPG (128440 bytes)Bob shows the crew how to prepare the testing equipment for field testing of the discharge.
vc27.JPG (144632 bytes)James performs a test for chlorine. vc28.JPG (111332 bytes)The comparator is being used to ascertain the approximate parameter content of the water.  Testing is being conducted for chlorine and ammonia. vc29.JPG (87262 bytes)Sean is using the comparator to check for copper.
vc30.JPG (109487 bytes)The crew is using the Hach color meter and noting the effects that tannins from falling leaves have had on the color of First Creek. vc31.JPG (119806 bytes)Testing is performed for detergent content of the water. vc32.JPG (82088 bytes)This is the litmus pH test result.  It leaned toward the base reading of 8, and we discussed the reason for the higher pH and why it does not dispute the fact that rainwater is acidic.

The next Engineering Venture Crew meeting is scheduled for, Saturday,  December 2 at 10:00 am.  We will visit the "War Room" at Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).
